Maddie B., MS, OTR/L
Occupational Therapist
Maddie has worked with a wide range of diagnoses, including autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and intellectual and developmental disabilities, in addition to a variety of mental health conditions. Maddie takes a strengths-based approach to develop genuine client relationships and to foster a therapeutic learning environment in which clients feel supported, understood, and empowered. She uses her positive attitude, friendly demeanor, and well-honed communication skills to effectively collaborate with children and their caregivers to maximize their participation in daily life.
Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Maddie discovered her passion for working with pediatrics during her middle school years through volunteering at a youth soccer program for kids with disabilities. Before earning her Master of Occupational Therapy, she worked for several years as a teaching assistant in a school for children with autism. Since becoming an OT, Maddie has worked in inpatient psychiatric settings, most recently at UNC’s Youth Behavioral Health hospital. Maddie’s diverse background allows her to address the unique needs of each client, from developmental delays to mental health challenges.
Maddie is committed to helping clients acquire life skills that increase their autonomy and independent participation in meaningful activities. Her method of inquiry involves careful examination of a client’s personal and environmental factors in order to develop effective interventions that enable children to develop healthy relationships and daily routines. Maddie believes that people learn best through activities that are fun and motivating. She often incorporates functional play interventions to establish rapport and encourage clients to explore and develop social interaction skills. She uses a variety of additional treatment techniques, including physical movement, nervous system regulation, experiential learning, and environmental adaptations.
Outside of work, Maddie enjoys biking and hiking, cooking projects with friends, going to the beach with her family, and listening to podcasts.
